Negative Growth in Domestic Air Traffic

Issue: 3 / 2019

The grounding of Jet Airways has impacted the Indian airline industry adversely with domestic airline passenger carrying capacity falling by as much as 14 per cent, resulting in a 4.2 per cent fall in domestic air traffic to 10.99 million in April 2019. The domestic passenger traffic had sustained a growth trajectory between July 2013 and March 2019. The moderation in capacity, which started in February when the now-defunct Jet Airways began grounding its fleet in a staggered manner, has also resulted in 30 to 40 per cent increase in airfares in March compared to September last year.
