Air India Plane Crashes at Mangalore

On May 22nd early morning the unthinkable happened when an Air India plane crashed at Mangalore airport. 158 people were killed and only 8 people survived the crash. The air India Express flight, (Boeing 737-800)which was only two and half years old was operated as an Air India low budget carrier and was flying from Dubai to Mangalore with 160 passengers on board and 6 crew members. The flight had a Serbian Pilot Zlatko Glusca in command and his co-pilot was H S Ahluwalia an Indian. The pilot had more than ten thousand hours of flying experience and around nineteen landing in Mangalore Airport. His Co-pilot had around three thousand hours of flying experience and around sixty six landing at this airport.

On landing the plane the pilot missed the landing spot and flew beyond the touchdown point by 2000feet. Then the pilot pressed the emergency breaks but the tyres busted since the plane was way above its normal landing speed after that the plane veered violently and it hit an antenna at the edge of the runway and then the plane crashed into the forest and within few seconds the plane was in flames. Air India has announced Rs 10 lakh as interim compensation to the family members of the dead and two lakh to the injured as stated by the Air India Chairman and Managing Director Arvind Jadhav.
